Wayne Walker owned and operated three delis in the 1970's and 80's. Along with many deli style food items, he produced an array of soups from scratch. It didn't take long for these soups to become the signature offerings of his deli. Wayne would pack these hearty and delicious soups and stews in quart containers for his customers to take home and enjoy.

Wayne always wanted to make his soups available for the masses. With the predominance of processed foods sold in most markets, he saw an opportunity to construct a business that could offer a healthy alternative to consumers. "Our business plan was to create great soups, and build a business that had heart and cared for their customers and employees".

In 1991, in a small corner of a friend's wholesale bread company in Somerville, MA, Simmering Soup began production of high quality soup. "We cooked our product in 10 gallon pots and packed it by hand into containers." It wasn't long before Wayne was turning customers into loyal fans through a small retail outlet. A handful of savvy restaurateurs in town began purchasing products by the gallon. A buzz was in the air. Wayne purchased two 40-gallon soup kettles to keep pace with the orders.

Now with an abundance of customers, a larger home was needed. In 1993, Wayne and his wife Annie Lewis moved the business to a facility in Needham, MA. They purchased new and larger equipment to manage the continued growth and became an approved USDA Production Facility. In response to customer demand, they expanded their product line to include specialty side dishes, sauces and prepared green salads.
In 1998 Annie, an Art Major from The University of Vermont; designed a label for Retail Packaging. This artwork adorns labels on display in many Retail Stores. The bright and bold design is also featured on this web site.
In 2001, Simmering Soup partnered with Okami Inc. www.okamifoods.com, a West Coast producer of fully cooked extended shelf-life sushi products. O Kyodo LLC was born, and became a large producer of sushi products for the East Coast.

Eleven years after Simmering Soup sold that first wholesale gallon of soup, the business moved into a 25,000 square foot manufacturing plant in Cumberland, RI. The staff has blossomed from a handful in 1991, to close to 100 proud and experienced employees today. Since those early years, we have continued to add "foodies" to the staff. We believe in the importance of having employees that have a passion for the food industry. To this end, Simmering Soup has a staff of chefs to help maintain quality and consistency. The talented staff keeps our products and our customers' needs as the focus of our everyday actions. We strive to maintain the superior quality in our products as well as in our customer service.
